For a little preview and insight into the CORE+ crew, we caught up with Lucy Mulcahy, a CORE+ instructor, ex Rhythmic Gymnast and has been practicing yoga for 6 years.
As I competed as an elite Rhythmic Gymnasts for nearly 10 years, yoga was a natural progression. My mum and I started regularly attending classes once a week but one class a week quickly grew to 6-7 days a week! I was hooked! It originally started to fill a void / space in my life where gym was, but this quickly grew to be my new love & passion.
How long have you been practising for?
I have been practicing 6 years.
Being a teacher or ‘yogi’, what is your favourite aspect about teaching?
Being able to guide students through their practice of yoga and pilates is a very humbling experience and allows you to constantly grow and evolve as a person. I find myself learning something new about myself every time I teach! I hope to nurture my students with a focus of leaving expectations at the door and having an open mind on the mat.
What is your favourite class to teach at CORE+?
Ooh that’s actually a really hard decision! Honestly love all the classes, as they offer something different to other studios. But if I had to choose one it would be Hot Pilates! The combination of the glute burning bridges, a strong planking & proning set, gets the heart pumping (HIIT) and of course the heat is amazing! You never regret turning up on your mat to practice!
Like other forms of activity a lot of people practice or continue a certain form of exercise for numerous reasons, why do you practice yoga? Is it the way it makes you feel- mentally/physically? Spiritually? Strength you gain?
Yoga is my “me time”. I don’t see yoga as a form of exercise for the body rather exercise for the mind. Yoga allows me to completely let go of any thoughts that are racing round my mind and to focus on my breath and how it feels within my body.
As I believe yoga focuses on how each pose feels not about how it looks it has taught me to love my body from the inside out. If you feel good on the inside it will be reflected on the outside.
Hot yoga in particular, you flush out your toxins and sweat, a lot! How do you replenish your body after a class? - As to those that don’t practice regularly it can be dehydrating etc.
Firstly, before stepping into the yoga studio, ensure that you are sufficiently hydrated! Aim to drink around 2-3 litres of water the day before you practice but this doesn’t mean skull it all at once rather sips throughout the day. After class, I make a protein smoothie with a scoop of protein powder, handful of berries, teaspoon of chia seeds, psyllium husk and peanut butter and water to help replenish my body. For hydration, I mostly rely on water but if I’ve taught a few classes I will have coconut water and a hydrolyte.
What is your favourite pose?
Wheel (Urdhva Dhanurasana). The benefits are endless! Including a boost in energy. It can help us maintain emotional stability and benefits the cardiovascular, lymphatic, nervous, and endocrine systems
